Small Scottish Weddings – Planning Guide & Key Facts
A small wedding in Scotland can range from a handful of close family and friends to a celebration of around 40 or 50 guests.
For many couples, the attraction is not simply having fewer people. A smaller guest list can mean more time with each guest, greater flexibility over the wedding day and the possibility of keeping much of the wedding party together in one place.
This guide explains how small Scottish weddings work, typical guest numbers, accommodation, ceremony options, catering and multi-day celebrations.

What Is Considered a Small Wedding?
There is no official definition of a small wedding, but the descriptions below are commonly useful when planning:
- Very small wedding: fewer than around 10 guests
- Micro wedding: around 10–20 guests
- Small wedding: around 20–40 guests
- Intimate wedding: often used more broadly for weddings of around 50 guests or fewer
These are descriptions rather than fixed rules.
A wedding with 40 guests can feel very intimate in a private country house, while the same number of guests might feel quite different in a large hotel or conference-style venue.
Why Do Couples Choose Smaller Weddings?
Couples choose smaller weddings for many different reasons.
Common advantages include:
- More time with guests — it is easier to speak properly to everybody you have invited
- A more relaxed atmosphere — smaller groups can make the wedding feel less formal
- Greater flexibility — ceremonies, meals and photographs can be easier to organise
- More accommodation options — a greater proportion of the guest list may be able to stay together
- Lower guest-related costs — catering, drinks and some other wedding costs are normally affected by guest numbers
A smaller wedding does not necessarily mean a shorter wedding or a smaller venue.
Some couples deliberately choose a larger exclusive-use property so that a small group has more space and privacy.
Small Weddings at Logie Country House
Logie Country House in Aberdeenshire hosts weddings of many different sizes.
The house has
18 bedrooms sleeping around 50 guests, so for some smaller weddings most or even all of the invited guests may be able to stay at Logie.
The private ballroom can accommodate up to 160 day guests, but there is no requirement to fill it.
Smaller groups can use the house, grounds and ballroom in whatever way suits their wedding rather than trying to make the guest list fit the capacity of the venue.
Logie is exclusively yours throughout your wedding stay, with no unrelated hotel guests and no other wedding taking place alongside yours.
2-Day and 3-Day Small Weddings
A smaller guest list can work particularly well with a multi-day wedding.
At Logie, couples choose either a
2-day midweek wedding or a
3-day weekend wedding.
This gives guests more time together than a conventional wedding where everybody arrives shortly before the ceremony and leaves after the evening reception.
For a smaller group, the extra time can make the wedding feel more like a gathering of family and close friends rather than a single formal event.

Accommodation for Small Weddings
Accommodation can be particularly important when planning a smaller wedding.
If many of the people you invite can stay at the wedding venue, there is less need to organise transport between hotels and the wedding.
At Logie:
- There are 18 bedrooms
- Around 50 guests can stay
- There is an indoor heated swimming pool
- There are two outdoor hot tubs
- There is a private cinema room
- Guests have access to the house and private grounds during the wedding stay

Indoor and Outdoor Ceremonies
Smaller weddings can give couples additional flexibility over the ceremony location.
At Logie, possible ceremony settings include:
- The courtyard
- The lawns
- Woodland areas
- Riverside areas
- Indoor locations
The availability of indoor alternatives is useful when planning an outdoor wedding in Scotland because the final decision can depend on the weather.

Food and Drink for a Smaller Wedding
A smaller guest list can give couples more flexibility over food and drink.
Wedding-day catering at Logie is provided by our long-standing catering partner,
Hudsons Catering.
Hudsons prepare a quote around the food and style of wedding you want rather than requiring every couple to choose the same menu.
For drinks on the wedding day, couples can either use the Hudsons bar or bring their own drinks and pay corkage.
Wedding-day catering is charged separately from the Logie venue hire price.
Small Twilight Weddings
A Twilight wedding is another option for couples planning a smaller celebration.
The wedding begins later in the day and normally moves from the ceremony into food, drinks and the evening party without a traditional full daytime wedding breakfast.
This can reduce catering costs while keeping the important parts of the wedding such as photographs, speeches, a first dance and an evening celebration.
At Logie, a Twilight wedding is still part of the normal 2-day midweek or 3-day weekend wedding stay.

Can Dogs Be Included in a Small Wedding?
Yes.
Dogs are welcome at Logie and can be included in ceremonies, photographs and the wedding stay.
A smaller wedding can sometimes make this easier because there are fewer guests and less activity for the dog to deal with.
Logie has extensive private grounds and an enclosed courtyard, although dogs should always be kept under proper control around livestock.

What Does a Small Wedding Cost?
Having fewer guests can reduce costs that are charged per person, particularly catering and drinks.
It does not necessarily reduce the venue hire cost.
At Logie, venue pricing depends primarily on the season and whether the wedding is a
2-day midweek or 3-day weekend wedding, rather than simply the number of guests invited.
This makes Logie particularly relevant to couples who want the privacy, accommodation and facilities of an exclusive-use country house rather than simply the smallest available function room.

Small Destination Weddings in Scotland
Smaller weddings can also work well for couples travelling to Scotland.
A smaller group can make accommodation, travel and wedding-day logistics easier to organise.
Logie Country House is near Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland.
The house was built in
1680, while the estate lands are recorded from
1492.
With accommodation, ceremony locations and the wedding celebration together at one property, guests do not need to travel between several venues during the wedding.

Small Scottish Wedding Planning Checklist
When planning a smaller wedding, useful questions include:
- How many people do we genuinely want to invite?
- Can most of our guests stay at the venue?
- Do we want a traditional wedding meal or something less formal?
- Would we prefer an indoor or outdoor ceremony?
- Do we want the wedding to last one day or several days?
- Are guests travelling a significant distance?
- Do we want exclusive use of the venue?
The answers usually matter more than whether the wedding is described as a micro wedding, small wedding or intimate wedding.
